Ely 2 Match Reports

ELY 2  VS CHERRY HINTON 1 (18 - 15)

Ely 2 travelled to Cambridge at the weekend for their last match of the winter season against the division 3 champions. The blustery conditions made it very difficult for both teams to score goals but Cherry Hinton soon took command and by the end of the first quarter were 6-1 up. Ely 2 settled into their game after the break with Sally Shipley, playing out of position at Centre, and Debbie Knott working tirelessly to feed the ball into the circle, and by the end of the third quarter were only two goals down. The last quarter saw some magnificent defending and interceptions from Alison Crombie, Victoria Cutforth and Anita Reidy thwarting Cherry Hinton’s scoring chances to just one goal. Ely 2 dug deep against a physical Cherry Hinton side and were rewarded by the shooting combination of Janice Quarrier and Jenny Calvert keeping their nerve and netting 5 late goals in quick succession. Ely came away victorious with a scoreline of 15-18.

B52’S VS ELY 2  (32 – 29)
Ely 2 travelled to Cambridge at the weekend to play against a side also looking to pick up points to avoid the drop zone. Ely did not start well and were soon 5-0 down. They rallied round after the poor start and pulled the score back to 5-5. B52’s continued to pressurise the Ely defence and edged ahead in each quarter. The weather took its toll as the heavens opened and the ball became difficult to handle but Ely put on a fantastic display in the last quarter with some accurate passing into the circle enabling the shooters to convert into goals. Ely were narrowly defeated by just 3 goals with the final score 32-29. Player of the match was awarded to Sue Everett who once again put on a magnificent display at centre fighting for every ball in the difficult conditions.

HAWKS 4 VS ELY 2 (13 - 32)

Ely 2 travelled to RAF Brampton on Sunday looking for a much needed win against Hawks 4 who are sitting at the bottom of the league. Ely started well and with some excellent defending had only conceded 5 goals by half time, with Ely’s shooters scoring 17. Ely continued to dominate in the second half and pulled away with an easy 32-13 victory. Sally Shipley was voted player of the match for her excellent display at goal attack.

ICONS 3 VS ELY 2 (16 - 37)

Ely 2 went to Icons in St Ives looking for a much needed win – and got it. Ely started well and the shooting combination of Janice Quarrier and Trina Baldock soon converted fine passing and movement by Sally Shipley, Sue Tune and Sue Everett in the last third into goals. Ely pulled further ahead in each quarter to win 37-16 as the defence of Alison Crombie, Victoria Cutforth and Celeste Gordon put on a magnificent display. Janice Quarrier was awarded player of the match.

ELY 2 VS STRETHAM 2 (34 - 24)
Ely battled hard from the first whistle and marked tightly to keep the score neck-and-neck throughout the first three quarters with some excellent defending from goal keeper Alison Crombie. Karen Carter came on twice during the game for injuries to Victoria Cutforth in the first quarter and Celeste Gordan in the third quarter and, being thrown in at the deep end, did a great job. Sally Shipley admirably stood in as a shooter and put in a good performance and it wasn’t long before Janice Quarrier found her form and started converting the excellent passing and movement from Debbie Knott and the tireless display from Sue Everett into goals. Ely came out for the last quarter in fighting form and shone throughout the court in the winter sunshine, pulling away eventual winners with a scoreline of 34-24. Ely’s Janice Quarrier was awarded player of the match.
